A Legacy for Generations

St Marys Cement was Votorantim Cimentos’ very first footprint in North America, and more than a century later, we are still the name customers across Canada and the United States call first. Six production and distribution facilities, positioned where construction actually happens, keep that true. We have never needed to chase every market within reach. We learned early which ones to serve, close to the contractors, project teams, and communities that depend on us showing up on schedule, and we have not forgotten that lesson since.

To us, showing up extends past the plant gates. This year, we again supported the Josh Bailey Classic, a youth hockey tournament the Clarington Minor Hockey Association created and named for a Bowmanville-born former NHL player who once suited up for the Clarington Toros. In Northumberland, our team traded hard hats for hammers alongside Habitat for Humanity Canada and helped build a home instead of a highway for a day. We do not treat these as sponsorships to check off a list. They are Our VC Way of Open Dialogue in practice, proof of something we learned a long time ago: showing up matters more than saying so.

Our VC Way principles, including Safety and Health, Open Dialogue, and Lasting Results, have guided decisions like these for longer than most of our competitors have existed. We are reducing emissions and improving resource efficiency across our operations, including through lower-carbon blended cements engineered to meet modern construction’s performance demands, without excusing the carbon intensity of every tonne produced.

From Small Town Vision to Regional Backbone

In 1912, John Lind founded St Marys Cement in St. Marys, Ontario, on a simple bet: the region’s limestone, clay, water, and rail access could supply high-quality cement to a growing economy. He was right. A single plant in a small Ontario town is now a network of facilities serving the Great Lakes corridor, the United States Midwest, and the Northeast, contributing to the infrastructure of two countries.

Joining Votorantim Cimentos added global reach without diluting the regional instinct. We still carry the entrepreneurial, hands-on mindset John Lind established in 1912, now backed by the technical resources of one of the world’s largest building materials companies. Over 110 years, growth was never the point on its own. We have outlasted recessions, wars, and shifts in the industry that closed plants younger than ours. Trust, earned one project at a time, was the point, and it still is.

Materials Behind Iconic Structures

The CN Tower, Roy Thomson Hall, Maple Leaf Gardens, and the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station each demanded materials capable of performing under extraordinary engineering pressure decades ago, and each one is still standing. Ours did, and it still does. Beyond those landmarks, countless bridges, roads, and civic facilities across the Great Lakes corridor have been built and maintained with what we produce. They connect cities, support public safety, and shape how people live and move, generation after generation.

Our commitment to Lasting Results means we do not meet a specification and move on. We supply materials engineered to perform over decades, so the infrastructure built today does not become tomorrow’s repair bill. Our commitment to Sustainable Legacy means those same structures are built with growing consideration for the environmental footprint of every tonne that goes into them. The landmarks behind us are one part of the record. What we build next, and how, is the part still being written.

A Network Built for North American Supply

Reputation alone does not move a truckload of cement, and we learned that before most of our customers were born. For customers managing complex, multi-phase projects, reliable supply is not a preference. It is a requirement. Our plants and terminals span the Great Lakes region, serving Ontario, Quebec, the United States Midwest, and the United States Northeast, with facilities in St. Marys and Bowmanville, Ontario, Charlevoix, Michigan, and McInnis, Quebec. Inland and coastal distribution routes keep supply consistent and timely, regardless of project location or scale.

Scale is not the whole advantage. Our regional presence puts customers in front of teams who know local market conditions, project timelines, and logistical realities firsthand, backed by decades of having already solved most of the problems a new project can raise.

A Full Portfolio for Modern Construction

The same standard applies to what we produce. Our cement portfolio is built for contemporary construction, where performance, durability, and environmental responsibility work as one requirement, not three competing ones. We manufacture a full range of specialty Portland and blended cements, each formulated for the specific application it serves, from standard residential pours to high-specification infrastructure.

CemPlus, our slag cement, makes the case plainly. It delivers high strength and durable performance while incorporating an industrial byproduct that would otherwise go to waste, lowering both the energy intensity of concrete production and the carbon footprint of every tonne placed. All masonry cements and Portland lime cements in our portfolio meet the requirements of the American Society for Testing and Materials and the Canadian Standards Association. What customers specify is what they get, every time, and has been since before many of today’s specifications existed.

Innovation at St Marys Cement runs through the product development process itself, showing up in materials that perform better, last longer, and leave a lighter environmental mark than the generation before them. Our Sustainable Legacy commitment shapes how we approach every product in the portfolio, because we learned long ago that building for the future means thinking past the project directly in front of us.

A century after John Lind opened his first plant in St. Marys, the bet has already paid off, and the terms have not changed. We have watched industries rise and fall around us. We build for the long term, in the ground and in the communities around it.
